Vimeo, the renowned video hosting and sharing platform, has made a significant leap into the realm of artificial intelligence (AI). The company recently introduced a suite of AI-powered tools designed to assist users in script creation, recording footage with a built-in teleprompter, and eliminating unwanted disfluencies and pauses from recordings. These features will be available starting July 17 as part of Vimeo’s Standard plan, priced at $20 per month (annual billing).
Ashraf Alkarmi, Chief Product Officer at Vimeo, stated that these new capabilities aim to support entry-level video creators, including CEOs, employees, and social media managers, who may lack the necessary skills, time, or resources to achieve their desired effects.
Vimeo’s internal research indicates that 50% of its customers record multiple takes while creating a video, and of those who redo their recordings, 25% exceed five takes. Alkarmi emphasized, “Despite being the most effective way to communicate powerful messages, video production inherently creates a barrier to this preferred communication channel. Our latest AI-powered workflow reduces those barriers, giving any creator the confidence to actually create videos in one take.”
To facilitate this vision, Vimeo’s script generator employs generative AI, specifically utilizing the OpenAI API, to generate video scripts based on a brief description and key inputs, such as tone (e.g., “confident,” “inspiring,” or “casual”) and desired length. The teleprompter tool provides a customizable script display with various font sizes and pacing options. Additionally, the text-based video editor automatically detects and removes filler words and awkward pauses.
Alkarmi envisions users leveraging these tools to quickly create highlight reels, host virtual events or company meetings, and extract quote clips for concise marketing videos.
While utilizing AI for such purposes has become a popular trend, Alkarmi highlights that Vimeo has been investing in AI for quite some time. In 2019, the company acquired Magisto, a pioneer in AI-based video editing technology. Vimeo built its Create tool on the foundation of Magisto’s infrastructure, enabling users to create videos by seamlessly combining stock photos, videos, and personal archives.
“One of Vimeo’s biggest misconceptions is that we’re an entertainment hub, but we’ve come a long way over the years,” Alkarmi emphasized. “Our goal is to help any business use video the same way that they use text or images, as a powerful way to communicate with both internal and external audiences.”
Vimeo’s strategic integration of AI into its platform underscores its commitment to simplifying video creation and fostering effective communication in the digital landscape.
