Genie Music, the music production and distribution affiliate of KT Corp. in South Korea, has introduced an innovative service that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) for digital music arrangement. The service, called genie.Re:La, allows users to upload an MP3 file, which is then analyzed by AI to generate a digital score. Users can edit the score to create a diverse range of music compositions.
During a news conference held at Genie Music’s headquarters in Seoul, the beta version of genie.Re:La was unveiled, showcasing the capabilities of this AI-based music composition and arrangement technology. Genie Music acquired Juice, a Seoul-based startup specializing in AI-based music technology, for 5.1 billion won ($3.9 million) last year. Juice has played a pivotal role in developing this innovative service.
Genie Music users can enjoy genie.Re:La free of charge, enabling them to convert music files into digital format and even compose music simply by humming. The service offers AI-assisted music arrangement without any additional cost.
The genie.Re:La service provides users with up to 20 suggested arrangements, and after its official launch later this year, a partial fee will be charged for certain arrangements. Users can also subscribe to a monthly plan for unlimited use of the music conversion and arrangement function. Additionally, a window will be available for the sale of arranged music as licensed content.
Juice CEO Kim Jun-ho revealed future plans for a consumer-to-consumer (C2C) platform that will enable users to buy and sell music created using AI music analysis and arrangement technology. Moreover, a revenue-sharing system is being developed to distribute a portion of the streaming revenue generated by an arranged piece of music to the original artist.
With Genie Music facing challenges in terms of user base, industry observers are curious to see if genie.Re:La can provide the breakthrough the company needs. According to data research service WiseApp, Genie Music had just over two million users in April, reflecting a 12.1% decline compared to the same period last year, trailing behind market leaders YouTube Music with 5.21 million users and Melon with 4.59 million users.
Genie Music CEO Park Hyun-jin expressed optimism about the new service, believing that genie.Re:La will help attract and retain a dedicated fan base. Market research company Market.us predicts that the global market for music-generating AI will witness substantial growth, surging from $229 million (290 billion won) in 2022 to $2.6 billion by 2032, providing significant opportunities for Genie Music and its AI-powered offerings.
